SDHS Dance Team’s Comp Season Starts

January 31, 2023

The dance team of SDHS is an important artistic group of the school with their halftime shows at football games, performances at assemblies, and even just with their appearances at important school events. It’s now time for their comp season to start (from January to March), which includes USA Nationals. The team already works hard and practices all year on their routines but Sophomore Chloe Yen says, “Competition season is definitely more stressful than

the normal because we are all working hard to perfect and clean each detail on our routines, therefore having longer practices.”

There are many types or styles of dance but the four different styles of dance that are important during competition season are contemporary, jazz, hip pop, and character. USA Nationals take place from March 17-18, which is the most important competition of the season since there are so many skilled (around thirty, much different from the usual fifteen) different teams to be up against.

Yen says that “The most stressful is definitely the last practice before the day of comp. and the last few mins before we go on the floor at competitions because, at least for me I start worrying about how everything might go wrong like slipping or doing a movement too early/late while everyone else was in sync and ruining the effect.”

She also says that the most comforting and fun memories are “…the dinners together after the competition because we can all relax and have fun after a competitions.”

After comp season is over, the dance team works on preparing for the end
