The Drumline
What work are they putting in behind the scenes?

The drumline is called a family by many people, from the long rehearsals they spend with each other to the friendships they make, to many people it is a second family. Every year the Drumline and Colorguard go into their competition season after marching season. To really understand what the Drumline does we asked the Drumline Instructor Eduardo Torrez for some more information.
When asked of a more in-depth explanation of what winter drumline is Torrez responded with, ” Our winter season is a performative arts part of our education, and what happens during this season is we put together a four to six-minute production that encapsulates not only music but movement, artistic expression, and musical expression”
Torrez goes on to say that it is a very demanding sport, and the competitions are extremely competitive. The drumline is overall one whole, but it can be broken down into two groups: the Pit, and the Battery. The battery marches and typically plays Snare, Bass, and Tenors. But the Pit is a standstill ensemble that really creates a musical element to the battery’s more visual aspect.
The drumline captain senior Crystal Kamiyama elaborates on the pit’s role in the production, ” We add drama to the show, we don’t march like the battery but we add a musical element to the show.”
Liam Luevand the Battery Senior co-captain helped delve into the battery’s part in the production. Liam stated, ” I think the battery brings life and energy into the production and pulls viewers into the narrative that is being portrayed, the creative visuals paired with the intensity of the music turn each percussionist into an actor within the story of the production, we work really hard to be able to portray strong emotions during the show while still playing complex and dynamic music”
The drumline puts in countless hours, and days to be able to portray a production that not only they but the school and instructors can be proud of.
