Spring Fling 2023: A Y2K Recap

March 2, 2023

On February 24, 2023, San Dimas Highschool had its fourth-annual Spring Fling dance. The Spring Fling is a dance that ASB puts together to kick off the spring season and close out winter. This year’s theme was Y2K, inspired by recently trending hairstyles, clothing, shoes, and artists from the 2000s.

Despite rainy weather, the gym’s dance kicked off at 8 pm, and the energy flowed through the music, food, and dance moves. With students in low-rise and baggy jeans, colorful tops, oversized shirts, pleated skirts, tracksuits, and more, your fellow Saints came through with the y2k theme and showed out.

From hit songs to ice cream trucks to video games, Spring Fling brought out all the vibes along with a free coat check. In light of the situation at Homecoming, students who attended received complimentary tickets to Spring Fling along with the guest that accompanied them.

When asking ASB Executive Board Vice President, Vanessa Sandoval about her experience in the process of putting the dance together and the overall outcome, she replied, “We knew from the start the dance was going to be in the gym, and at first, we weren’t super excited, but it ended up great because of the rain. The process started with getting student input into what they wanted to see at the dance. Then we, as an ASB class, voted for the top three out of the ones that had equal amounts of votes; we wanted to put student voices first for this dance. Then on Instagram, we had another poll to decide what theme the dance would be, and the y2k theme was set. The exec board is in charge of spring fling, so for Jaiden, myself, Isabella, and Beatrice, it was our first time putting it on, and we were really happy with how it played out.”

Most students who attended said the night’s energy came and went at times as people came and left the dance circle for food, pictures, and games but it seemed there was never a dull moment.

Yeah some people just stood around for a while, and it looked like everyone was just standing in a circle but as the night went on I guess people got more comfortable and really started enjoying themselves

Some students, such as Camille Calderon, had their own opinions about how the dance went and stated, “I think that everyone’s experience varies on who you’re with and your confidence level; I mean, there were some people who never danced and sort of just stood her with their friends while my friends and I danced to almost every song simply because we don’t really care what people think about us.”

Overall the night seemed well, and students had a great time. This dance seemed to really make it up to the students who didn’t fully get to enjoy homecoming, and even for those who didn’t attend homecoming, it was an excellent experience for all.
