Reliving The Good ‘Ole Days

1999 Team Reunion at Boys Basketball Game

February 8, 2019

On Friday, January 18th, the large crowd of supporters began to pile into the gym of San Dimas High School preparing to cheer on Varsity Basketball against Baldwin Park. Joining the crowd on this special night were some of the players and coaches from the 1999 Boys Varsity Basketball Team.

This night’s white-out themed game celebrated the 20th Anniversary of SDHS winning the 1999 CIF Championship Game. Before the game started, Assistant Principal, Rita Kear, recognized the players and coaches that were a part of that amazing team. The moment featured a video shot by former point guard and captain, David Malana, who at the time was in the Philippines talking about the memories of the 1999 team and appreciation for his team.

Saints junior Youssef Darwiche said, “It’s great but also nerve-racking to be playing in front of those legends,” he continued, “we just want to do a good job and make them proud”. The game started soon after that with starters, Matthew DesMarets, Dylan O Leary, Romin Ortega, Daniel Pimental, and Jarren Record taking the court.

First Quarter flew by with the Saints leading 15-8. Second quarter comes around and the Saints add to their lead 30-13. Varsity cheer just coming off their own CIF win, performed at halftime, keeping the audience alive and excited to watch the next half of the game.

The players from each team came back onto the court, ready to finish what they started. Third quarter starts and the Saints held their own and kept faith alive at 42-22. “Hopefully they enjoyed watching us and had a good time,” Darwiche commented.

Though the Braves showed great sportsmanship, they were not able to defeat the mighty Saints when the final buzzer sounded and the game was over. It was a 57-28 victory for San Dimas over Baldwin Park.
