Earlier this year Drake and J Cole dropped a song called “First Person Shooter” taking a shot at Grammy award-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar. This ignited a flame within the rap community. Within a few months, Metro Boomin, and Yeat released a collab album which included a song titled “Like Dat” featuring Kendrick Lamar. Lamar began to throw shots toward Drake and his latest album as well as throwing shade toward J Cole while claiming that “there is no big three only big me”. This began to instigate many artists within the rap community, it’s all anyone is talking about. Within the following two weeks, J Cole releases a surprise album featuring a song titled, “7 Minute Drill” in this song he makes fun of Kendrick’s height, inability to produce consistently, and talks about his “overrated albums” claiming he fell off whereas J Cole himself is currently at the top of his game. He proceeds to say later in the song that Kendrick was only dissing him to obtain attention. A couple of weeks pass and J Cole comes out and publicly apologizes for his actions and the song dropped has been removed from all streaming services.
As for Drake, he responded by releasing a song titled “Push-ups” where he comes after multiple rappers and artists including The Weekend, Rick Ross, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar. Many people have strong opinions on this song and all of the current drama in the rap community including senior Jazlynn Rodriguez “I feel like the song was very bold and big and took hard shots toward many people. I personally liked the song. I thought it was good, not amazing but good. I’m just excited to see what’s next”. Many people feel the same way about this song, as it was very daring and took the rap community by storm with people making fun of Metro and Kendrick. The pressure shifts suddenly from Drake to Kendrick Lamar wondering if he will respond and when he will respond.
Despite Kendrick’s lack of producing consistently many believed he will snap back to Drake’s new release including senior Jacob Gonzales saying “I feel like Kendrick is gonna respond to all of the diss tracks when his next album comes out in 5 years he takes forever to come out with anything”. Kendrick produces classic albums and top-tier songs but likes to take his time making songs and albums. Despite his Grammy awards and popular music, many believed he needed to find a way to respond to this vicious diss track sooner than later. With the pressure on, Kendrick Lamar delivered with a song titled “euphoria” a six minute twenty three second merciless hit diss track with over 60 million streams.
Now within the past six weeks, nine diss tracks have been fired back and forth between these two artists. Lamar takes shots at Drake revealing that he may have a secret daughter and multiple criminal allegations toward him while Kendrick also stating to have a man on the inside. In his song “meet the grahams” he continues exposing Drake saying that he is a failure as a father, ignoring his children for his life of fame and fortune, with problems of addiction as an underlying issue. Whereas Drake fires back making fun of his size while also accusing Lamar of one of his children not being his, and having criminal allegations against him. He also claimed Kendricks “man on the inside” works for Drake and Kendrick got set up. This leads to Kendrick taking down his cover picture on the song “meet the grahams”. And now despite hit songs on both sides of this beef it leads people to believe what’s next for Mr. Big me and Lover Boy Drake and who is currently on top.
