At San Dimas High School, it’s hard not to notice Alex Price. Not only does he dominate the soccer field with his footwork and skills, but he’s also a standout in the school band, where his trumpet leaves everyone in awe. Balancing the demands of being both an athlete and a dedicated musician isn’t easy, but Alex makes it look effortless. Whether he’s scoring the winning a soccer match or hitting the perfect note, Alex’s passion and talent shines through in everything he does.
Saint Scroll: When did you first start playing soccer and the trumpet, and what drew you to both?
Alex Price: I started playing soccer when I was little, like five years-old and I have played the trumpet since 6th grade. My parents wanted me to be active and soccer was just something that happened and I just stuck with it but music I really enjoy because it just makes me feel different that I can’t really explain in words.
Saint Scroll: Who are your biggest inspirations in soccer and music?
Alex Price: I don’t follow soccer that much so I’m not sure but I was inspired by 80’s groups and later on I was inspired by Daniel Caesar to pick up the piano.
Saint Scroll: Can you share a favorite memory from a band performance?
Alex Price: There is a lot that I can say especially from this past season but one of my favorites was being on the stage prop with my friends messing around.
Saint Scroll: What has been the biggest challenge in balancing your commitments to soccer and the band, and how did you overcome it?
Alex Price: The biggest challenge was time management, soccer was right after school and band was right after soccer so I could only do homework when I got back around ten o’clock at night and I would spend many nights awake trying to do AP assignments and it was tiring but I overcame it by just doing it. I forced myself to get it done because I knew if I didn’t do it then it wouldn’t be done.
Saint Scroll: How do your bandmates support your dual passions?
Alex Price: They support me by asking how soccer is going and cheering me up after losses and they are just there for me.
Saint Scroll: How have your band directors, and family helped you in juggling both activities?
Alex Price: Band is very flexible with sports and band directors are very considerate by letting you finish practice before going to band practice or allowing you to go to a game rather forcing you to go to practice and they allow you to be in band and sports unlike other schools that force you to choose sports or band. My family always comes in clutch by driving me everywhere and going to games and band competitions and they bend over backwards to give me opportunities that can give me memories that I can hold for the rest of my life.
