San Dimas’ AVID-11 is partnered with Chick-fil-A, which led to them packing many sets of books for the Bonita district’s elementary schools and distributing them on October 24th. The Avid class also wanted to promote reading, so they also read to the children and they talked about the book with the TK Students.
The AVID program has always prepared students for college by building skills and community involvement. This project encapsulated that mission. Their partnership with Chick-fil-A has given the AVID-11 class an opportunity by providing the resources they need to impact the district by supplying the books for them to pack and deliver.
“We’re so excited to share a good experience with them,” said AVID student, Eli Perea. “Books open up the mind, and we want to show them that.”
San Dimas’ AVID 11 class has worked in preparation for this event and they intend to make many kids days. They did achieve that goal when they walked into the school and read to them.
The AVID students agree that it was fun, and they would like to do something similar in the future.
AVID teacher, Mrs. Valencia said, “This initiative helps our students get involved and make a lasting impact on younger students.” The AVID 11 class didn’t just hand out books, they took time to invest in the students, making fun memories with them that would last.
The kids of these elementary schools love the fact that they have the opportunity to have connections with students in completely separate grades. They were eager to answer AVIDs questions about the book and to tell them what they knew, and AVID was happy to read to them and provide them with questions.
The elementary school teachers also appreciate this, showing the kids that reading is needed through all grades. Gladstone TK teacher, Mrs. Cruz said, “I love the books for the kids. They’re super excited. And I love having older Kids come in and work with them. They just love it”
This project seems to benefit everybody to be part of it like the AVID students enjoy it, teachers enjoy it, the TK students enjoy it, and it seems like everybody liked it. So it is a success overall it seems like the project was a success. Makes you wonder what AVID 11 going to do next.
