October’s Artist of the Month, senior Rhiannon Lallathin, is involved in many arts here at SD, where she sings in choir, plays the flute, and acts in drama, all while showcasing her various talents within each craft.
Saint Scroll: What is your name?
Rhiannon Lallathin: Rhiannon.
Saint Scroll: What instrument do you play?
Rhiannon Lallathin: I play the flute.
Saint Scroll: When did you start playing the flute?
Rhiannon Lallathin: I started playing my sophomore year.
Saint Scroll: Do you do any other arts?
Rhiannon Lallathin: Yes, I do choir and drama also.
Saint Scroll: How long have you been in band, choir, and drama?
Rhiannon Lallathin: I’ve been in drama since freshman year, I started band sophomore year, and I started choir junior year.
Saint Scroll: Whats it like to be a member in band, choir, and drama?
Rhiannon Lallathin: It’s really fun, I really like having something to do after school, since there’s practice everyday. Even though it gets exhausting sometimes, it’s really fun because all my friends are in it.
Saint Scroll: Do you want to be in a band/involved in the arts someday?
Rhiannon Lallathin: I wanna continue to play the flute in college because I really love playing that instrument.
Saint Scroll: How do your practices look like?
Rhiannon Lallathin: I practiced at home a lot, since I’m in wind ensemble 3 this year, the music pieces are a lot harder, so I practiced at home a lot. I take home my music, and practice slowly, and then eventually speed it up until I get it down.
Saint Scroll: Do you have any instruments that you want to learn how to play in the future?
Rhiannon Lallathin: I want to learn how to play the clarinet and the piano.
Saint Scroll: How much time does band, choir, and drama take up?
Rhiannon Lallathin: It takes up a lot of my schedule, band practices take up every Tuesday and Thursday for 6 hours, we have Friday Night Football Games, and every Saturday for a few weeks we have all day competitions. For drama, we practice Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and then when we have a showing, practice is everyday. Choir is more of an in school thing, unless we have a concert, it’s mostly just in class.
Saint Scroll: How do you balance school with all these extracurriculars?
Rhiannon Lallathin: It was a lot harder junior year, but since it’s my senior year, my workload is a lot easier, but last year, I found myself working at every break and bringing all my work to practices to work on in the free time.
Saint Scroll: What’s your favorite thing/skill you developed because of these extracurriculars?
Rhiannon Lallathin: Definitely leadership skills, I’m the co-section leader, and that skill is definitely my favorite one I’ve developed, I think it’s very useful.
