English Teacher Mr. Coulter has made it his mission since 2021 to make San Dimas High School the best it could be, and his mission continues. San Dimas High School has undergone many changes over the past 5 years; for some of those changes, you could point to Mr. Coulter for his impact.
In case you didn’t know, Mr. Coulter holds Integrity Team meetings every month in the library. These meetings bring staff and students together to discuss ongoing issues on campus, such as bullying, current events, and whether we have enough bathrooms on campus. These meetings bring our school together to express our concerns and thoughts, allowing everyone’s voice to be heard, a big necessity for positive change.
During the Integrity Team meetings, Coulter encourages students not to shy away from their true feelings about campus issues. The meetings have produced much positive change around campus.
In 2022, many students stood up and stated that the bathrooms on campus weren’t enough and advocated for the school to build more bathrooms. With this being a heavy topic at the meetings, new bathrooms were built near the cafeteria going into the 2023 school year.
Mr. Coulter makes it clear that his mission is to lead students. He has been working and some of the latest issues that his meetings have gone over have been the election, how to help students who don’t speak English better on campus, and so much more. His meetings are a safe place for so many students to express their ideas and have created a new way for student leadership.
When asking Mr. Coulter what his plans are for his meetings, he says “To do things things that occur and make a difference…”. Coulter believes that there is always room for improvement on campus and he explained that “the meetings have had a tremendous change on the dress codes…” and with the help of “Dr. Nix and more staff helping out to make it less biased”.
Knowing that our campus could improve and become better with more people getting involved has been apparent the past few years, and even if the change is slow it is better than no change at all. Mr. Coulter will continue to inspire students as long as he is teaching at San Dimas, and he makes it his mission to listen to every student’s voice.
