In an intense game on December 10th, the San Dimas High School girls’ water polo team faced off against their biggest rivals, Bonita High School. The game showed the skill and athleticism of both teams, as every quarter had everyone on the edge of their seats. Although the final score was 8-4, as the Girls’ Varsity Lady Saints faced a tough loss, the match ended with great sportsmanship and respect from both sides. After the game, the coach reflected on what they could improve on and what he was proud of from this team.
The first half of the game was extremely close, with our San Dimas Saints leading 3-2. The defense was looking strong, but offensively, the coach mentioned that the team struggled a bit to find their rhythm. As the game went on, Bonita made smart adjustments to their strategy plan, scoring 2 points and taking a 4-3 lead in the 3rd quarter. The San Dimas Lady Saints found it tough to shoot the ball, especially with Bonita’s “Drop” defense, which meant players were left open further from the goal, challenging them to take long shots. Unfortunately, San Dimas couldn’t pull off the win, losing the final game 8-4.
Despite the loss, the expectations from the Mr, Johnston, the coach of the girl’s team, were clear, he wanted the team to play hard and give 100% effort while executing their defenses. The team lived up to his expectations and they gave the coach hope for the future season. The coach acknowledged while the team’s performance was okay, it was looking promising for later matches. The players showed determination and resilience, learning and strategizing their game. As they get ready for league matches, the team plans to focus on their shooting accuracy and teamwork in the upcoming practices, ensuring that every player understands their role in both offense and defense.
The coach, Mr. Johnston, credits Vince Lombardi, a popular football coach, for famously saying, “Offense wins games, defense wins championships.” The coach emphasized the need to work extensively on the offense strategies but remained confident in the team’s ability to win a championship. With determination and hard work, the San Dimas girls’ water polo team is likely to win league championships.
