Imagine volunteering at a senior home. That’s exactly what the AVID students did with their latest project, Do Good December. On a Saturday, two weeks after Thanksgiving break, these dedicated juniors visited a local retirement home, turning their free time into a heartwarming experience of community connection and giving back.
The day was filled with activities that bridged a generational gap. Students connected with the seniors, sharing stories and listening to their history and wisdom about what they had to offer from their experience.
“It was such an amazing experience,” said one AVID student. “Hearing their stories reminded me how important it is to appreciate the wisdom they had to offer.”
Students’ activities they did with the residents included creating Christmas ornaments and a sing-along with various songs. The spirit was forced, but in the end, residents and students enjoyed the time spent. One resident shared that it was the most fun they’d had in months, highlighting the visit’s impact.
The AVID students brought the spirit of Christmas and decorations to brighten the home. These thoughtful gestures added to the space for a cheerful holiday environment. The residents were pleased by the decorations and the time the students devoted to making the day special.
This project has a core mission of AVID, and it is to prepare students for life after their education. They engage with their community which motivates them to grow as caring people. They stepped out of their comfort zones and participated in this nice project, the students also showed us the power of volunteering and the joy of making a difference in someone’s day.
“Seeing the smiles on their faces was a nice feeling,” said one of the AVID students. “It’s a reminder of what the holiday season is about; kindness, generosity, and connection.”
The retirement home staff were equally appreciative of the visit. They seemed to be happy that Avid was there and trying to capture the moments with the seniors.
As the holiday season continues, the AVID juniors’ visit serves as an inspiring example of the impact that even a few hours of giving back can have. Their efforts brought joy to the residents and reaffirmed the importance of community connection—a perfect way to embody the spirit of Do Good December.
