The SDHS Dance Team kicked off their competition season with an impressive start on Saturday, January 11, at the Sharp International Dance Competition. Our varsity took first place in both routines, and the JV earned first place in one dance and second in the other. These wins set the tone for an exciting season ahead, and the team is ready to bring their energy and talent to the many more competitions they attend.
This dance competition, Sharp International Dance Competition, was held at “AB Miller High School” in the city of Fontana. Various schools attended this competition, like Hart High School, Fountain Valley High School, St. Lucy’s Priority High School, Buena Park High School, and more! To start the day, our team arrived at 12:00 pm to support our 5 soloists, Bryce Andrew (9), Natalia Alcantar (10), Tess Mcdonald (11), Victoria Contreras (11), and Chloe Yen (12). Natalia Alcantar (10) stated, “The solos were great, I loved watching our girls and cheering them on, it’s one of my favorite things about competitions!” Our girls did amazing on their solos, and we can’t wait to see them at the future comps
Right after the solos, we went to our changing room and the captains led a team stretch, where they later ran their routines. They didn’t have much time until our JV jazz was up. They performed to the song “It’s Easy”, and it was great, our JV really outdid themselves! Not long after, our Varsity Pom “Silent Screamer” was up next, where they wowed the judges with their precision and technique. Our JV Pom, “Call The Shots” later went up, and not long after, our last routine of the day, Varsity jazz, to the song “Give It To Me” went up.
This competition also held specialty competitions where Tess Mcdonald represented San Dimas and won 3rd for best leaps, and 2nd for best turns! The awards were right after, where our Varsity took first place in both routines, and JV got first in pom, and second in jazz! Our soloists received their awards too, Bryce Andrew (9) took 5th, Chloe Yen (12) took 4th, Tess Mcdonald (11) took 3rd, and Victoria Contreras (11) took first. Natalia Alcantar (10) also took 1st for the hip-hop category! This was such a great first competition full of fun and dancing with your team. Jessica Liu (11) stated, “This team means everything to me, I’m so excited for the upcoming season with these girls.”
Looking ahead, the SDHS Dance Team will continue to prepare for multiple upcoming competitions and regionals, eventually leading up to nationals in the spring. The team encourages the school community to continue supporting them as they represent San Dimas with pride and passion.
