The vibrant silks of Colorguard spin through the air as the season begins, with the components of dance, theater, and dazzling equipment blended together to make a stunning and unique performance. Spinning and tossing flags, rifles, and sabers, the Colorguard team here at San Dimas High School is getting ready to amaze audiences and compete against other guards with a remarkable, striking new show.
The team is gearing up for an exciting season, and this year, three dedicated and experienced captains are leading the members on the path to a successful start. Captains Sydney Martinez, Janeane Gomez, and Zoe Carlton are eager to help the team achieve even higher goals this year.
“I’m so excited for our upcoming winter season,” captain Zoe says. “We’re so excited to see everyone’s reactions once we finally get to perform!” Captain Sydney adds, ”We’re doing something we’ve never done before.” The captains are thrilled to lead this year’s season, with a compelling new theme, as captain Janeane affirms, ”We’ve been through a lot, but we’re back.”
But what exactly is Colorguard, and what makes it such an integral part of the school’s spirit and performance?
Colorguard is an astonishing performance art that uses dance and props, with the main selections being a variety of flags, rifles, and sabers, to perform synchronized routines set to music, accompanying marching bands during halftime shows, parades, rallies, and competitions. The guard provides the main visuals of the shows, adding flair and personality to the precise formations. However, during the spring season, winterguard begins, and the spotlight is on the team, allowing more visual creativity. This art requires endurance, coordination, self-confidence, and attentiveness, with complex tricks and intricate movements.
After this winterguard season, tryouts are open again during the summer for the Colorguard’s marching season, bound to be as triumphant, if not even more so, than last year.
With their first public performance being on February 15 at Summit High School, let’s wish the guard an enthusiastic good luck for the upcoming season!
