San Dimas track runners and jumpers are adjusting to a new era with Coach Mundo, who is temporarily stepping in for Coach Jackson. Coach Jackson, the team’s usual coach, is currently coaching the basketball team but should return to coaching track and field in February. Our saints are adapting to Mundo’s new coaching style and a new approach to track.
Coach Mundo, who has prior experience in coaching long-distance runners, has shifted from the typical 300 meters to a mile run around the school for a daily warm-up. It’s a shift from their typical routine, but they’re getting used to it each time practice starts. Many students find this challenging yet rewarding, for it builds up stamina and endurance. Sophomore Lilly Homyak, 100-meter and 200-meter runner states, “Building up my endurance by running longer has helped in my sprinting events”
Sophomore Bella Ramos, a 100-meter and 200-meter runner, shares her first impressions about Mundo, stating, “Coach Mundo is really nice, and I like his coaching style, so I’m interested to see how I will grow.” Ramos and her teammates have said that Mundo balances encouragement with feedback, which is helping ease the team into their season.
Although the coaching transition presents an adjustment period, some athletes appreciate the opportunity to experience a different approach. “I hated the idea of running over a mile, but it’s growing on me.” Homyak later states “I think his coaching style is very organized and will help us when the season starts.”
The team’s goal for this season remains high, even with the temporary coach guiding them. Our athletes are hoping to improve their records and place well in meets, knowing that Jacksons return will come when the most competitive part of the season will start.
As track season progresses, the team embraces this new change, overcoming challenges, and providing resilience on and off the track.
