From inspiring tributes to exciting games, San Dimas High School’s Black Student Union (BSU) brought Black History Month to life with a lineup of engaging activities that included spirit days, movie screenings, and celebrations of historical Black figures.
Throughout February, BSU planned interactive events that highlight the richness of Black culture while making learning fun. These events were designed to be simple yet prideful, ensuring maximum participation from students of all backgrounds. Spirit days gave students the chance to express themselves while paying tribute to key elements of Black fashion and music. The schedule of events included:
- February 7th: Drake vs. Kendrick Day – Students showcased their favorite artists by representing either Drake or Kendrick Lamar through their attire. This was one of the most historical rap beefs and highlighted a lot about black culture.
- February 7th: Movie Screening: The Princess and the Frog – The quad became a mini theater as students enjoyed Disney’s first Black princess story.
- February 14th: Valentine’s Day/Black History Month Spirit Day – Students were encouraged to wear pink in celebration of both love and Black history.
- February 21st: Y2K Fashion Day – A throwback to early 2000s style, celebrating a defining era in Black music and fashion.
- February 28th: Pan-African and 90s Style Day – Students honored Pan-African heritage or rock the bold looks of the 90s. Also worth clash points encouraging students of different grades to participate and contribute to their class.
BSU President and senior Ashawna shared the vision behind these events, stating, “For Black History Month, BSU’s main goal is to embrace and celebrate Black culture, history, and people from all walks of life. By discussing, learning, and having fun with Black history topics, fashion, music, and more, we as a school are able to appreciate and honor the traditions that define Black culture.”
With a Black population of only 3.19% in San Dimas, these celebrations were more important, fostering awareness, representation, and inclusivity within the school community. By promoting a sense of unity and appreciation, BSU is making Black History Month at San Dimas High School both meaningful and exciting. Through fashion, music, and film, students can learn about Black contributions in an engaging and impactful way. With the enthusiasm of BSU leading the charge, this year’s celebration promises to be one to remember.
