The official award for teacher of the year at San Dimas High school was announced on March 5th 2025. Math teacher Mrs. McGill has been selected to be teacher of the year for the 2024/2025 school year. Let’s take a deep dive to find out the journey Mrs. McGill had to take to get to where she is today as teacher of the year!
The award of teacher of the year award was given at a staff meeting to the teacher who was recognized for passion and hard work. Mrs. McGill is a dedicated math teacher who teaches integrated math 1 and math lab. She provides enjoyable lessons every day and a great attitude that fills the classroom with positive energy. Mrs. McGill expressed, “It feels great to be recognized by my peers and the San Dimas students. It truly is an honor, and I’m humbled by the recognition.” Mrs. McGill says the biggest part of teaching is watching her kids build her confidence. “A lot of students come to me with this I hate math mentality so I have to break down this wall that they’ve built around mathematics and their understanding.” Mrs. McGill says.
This is Mrs. McGill’s 23rd year teaching math and her 13th year teaching in the Bonita Unified School District. Mrs. McGill graduated from her first college Wayne State University with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics Education. She got her first Masters from Mary Grove College and her second Masters from Concordia University Irvine.
When asking Mrs. McGill when she first realized she wanted to teach math as her job she answers “I realized it my senior year of high school. I had a really good math teacher and she inspired me and at the time I knew I was gonna be a teacher, I just didn’t know what I was gonna teach and that’s when I realized I wanna teach math like her. Everything made sense, she made it so easy for me to understand that I even got to skip taking the final. She really inspired me and i’m so glad she did I wouldn’t be here today if she didn’t.”
Even outside of her classroom Mrs. McGill is actively involved with her students creating a safe space in her heart for students to come to her with advice and help outside of math. To be recognized as an educator on campus who can give a proud representation of a leader and what it means to be a true San Dimas Saint. We value and hold our love for Mrs. McGill as she revives her award with pride.
