On March 11, at 6:00 p.m., the San Dimas Saints Baseball team played the Bonita Bearcats in their annual Grand Slam game. The Saints came out on top with the win, shutting out the Bearcats 5-1, bumping up the Saints record 5-3. This is the 52nd rivalry game between them, and for the past six years, the Saints have continued to beat them.
Bonita started off at home plate, going against pitcher Josh Calcanas, who was playing at his best. He struck the 3 starting batters from Bonita out back-to-back. Putting the Saints up to bat, during the first inning, the Saints came out hot. They were fired up, putting themselves up by 3 runs. In the second inning, Ashton Romero hit a 3-run home run to take the lead and keep the energy up.
After the Saints put themselves up on the scoreboard for the 1st inning, Bonita attempted to keep up with the Saints but only ended up scoring once during the 2nd ending; the Saints didn’t seem happy about that one score and held them to 1 score for the rest of the night not letting Bonita attempt to come back.
For the next few innings, the game got slow. No one was hitting the ball or getting on bases to try and score until the 5th inning; the Saints woke up and proceeded to put up another two runs on the board, putting the game to 5-1 and keeping the score there. In the last 2 innings, the saints knew they had secured the win, and neither of the teams
After the game, Nathan Torres, a Varsity Baseball player spoke a bit about his history with baseball, “I started playing when I was 3, I believe; I wanted to because my dad played when he was younger, and I always heard about how good he was. I’m very excited because it is always one of the most intense games of the year we have and it’s also just a historic thing. My mindset is to be aggressive and never let off on them, I felt really good after the win; we got to keep the grand slam cup for the 6th year in a row, The key players were Ashton and Joseph they both showed out, and were clutch in the game”.
After the Saints’ big win against their cross-town rival, their record is now 5-3.
