Over spring break, Mr. Pugh took San Dimas High School’s Chamber and Bel Canto choirs on their Central Coast tour on April 2–5, exploring Solvang, Morro Bay, and Hearst Castle along the scenic California coastline and performing at the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. They had many opportunities to enjoy the sights of the coastal areas, that included Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara, the harbor village in Ventura, and finally finishing with a day at Universal Studios. While having the time to sightsee, the honor choirs also had the chance to improve their songs and musical abilities with Dr. Glysson from California Polytechnic University, at San Luis Obispo.
The trip began with a stop in the charming Danish-style town of Solvang, where students had the chance to explore the shops, take in the cozy sights, and grab lunch on their own. The cobblestone streets and small stores set the tone for an exciting journey up California’s Central Coast.
After their time in Solvang, the choirs headed to California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where they worked with Dr. Glysson in a private workshop. Dr. Glysson, Director of Choral Activities at Cal Poly, offered professional insight and techniques to help elevate the choirs’ musical abilities, including performing with emotion and energy. Chamber and Bel Canto also had the opportunity to shadow Cal Poly’s Chamber Choir’s rehearsal, experiencing how college choir students rehearse and behave during class.
That evening, the students gathered for a group dinner at the iconic Woodstock’s Pizza, and the following morning, the choirs journeyed to Morro Bay, a peaceful seaside town known for its iconic rock and quaint waterfront. Students had free time to walk along the harbor, visit local antique stores, shell shops, and enjoy lunch with an ocean view.
From there, the group traveled up the coast to take a guided tour of Hearst Castle, the lavish estate built by newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. The choirs were able to take in the opulence of the mansion, its art collection, and the dramatic views from the hilltop. The tour offered a glimpse into California’s historic elite and left many students inspired by its grandeur.
That evening, they returned to San Luis Obispo just in time to explore the vibrant Downtown Farmers’ Market, a local favorite filled with food vendors, live music from Cal Poly SLO’s students, and handmade goods. Students roamed the streets, tasting local treats and experiencing the market’s charm.
Friday included a meaningful performance opportunity at the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, one of California’s oldest and most beautiful missions. Before performing, the choirs had the chance to tour the historic site and learn about its deep cultural roots in California history, even viewing the original church bells. Singing in the mission’s sanctuary offered rich acoustics and allowed Chamber and Bel Canto the experience of performing inside a church.
After the performance, the group drove south to Santa Barbara, where they enjoyed lunch on their own and free time at Stearns Wharf, where students explored the shops, snapped photos by the pier, and took in the gorgeous coastal views of the Pacific.
Later that day, the trip continued with a scenic drive down to Ventura, where they checked into their final hotel. Dinner was held at a local steakhouse, giving everyone time to unwind. Afterward, students had the choice of swimming or exploring the harbor village in Ventura, enjoying nighttime views of the marina and perhaps indulging in some late-night treats or souvenirs.
Hailey Wiesman and Amanda Mendoza agree that “performing in the mission was an interesting experience, with the unique space and echoes” and “walking around in Morro Bay was very fun.”
The final day of the tour brought a high-energy conclusion: a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood. Students spent the day enjoying rides, shows, and the behind-the-scenes magic of one of the world’s most iconic theme parks. From the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to the thrilling Jurassic World ride, the theme park experience was a celebratory finish to the trip.
As the buses made their way back to San Dimas High School, the students of Bel Canto and Chamber Choirs carried home not just souvenirs and photos, but memories of making music, exploring with friends, and sightseeing along California’s coast.
