Eye catchers of Camp

the good and the bad of Met Gala 2019

The first Monday of May is always reserved for the biggest night of fashion in benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, hosted by Vogue editor-in-chief and journalist Anna Wintour, the Met Gala is known for the best of the best. Famous stars like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Cher, Gigi and Bella Hadid and the Kardashians/Jenners are always the main spotlight of the night but this year held some new people in the camera’s eye.

This year, the Met took place on May 6th with the theme of ¨Camp: Notes on Fashion¨.  This had a lot of people talking on what camp truly is and questioning whether to show up in a sleeping tent and some smores in hand…and no camp is not the verb of camping in the woods. The true meaning of camp is to go beyond the boundaries, to be theatrical and extravagant. But camp is also not just throwing pieces of fabric together and calling it a day, it is putting pieces together that will create a beautiful statement and an even better story.

When Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and Lady Gaga were announced as co-chairs everyone knew that this year was going to hold something spectacular, especially with Lady Gaga being one of the biggest influences of camp. Although many stars showed up fitting to the T with the theme, pop star Gaga created history by stripping down into 4 different outfits designed by one of  her good friends Brandon Maxwell and displaying a whole entire jaw dropping performance. So many were wowed with this ostentatious look exhibited by Gaga and thought that this would set the tone for the rest of the attendees, but some of the audience was very disappointed.

Since this years theme was difficult to comprehend, many were confused on how to dress and how to show up to the gala.  Anna Wintour wanted to see extravagant pieces that held meaning and not just an outfit thrown on somebody. For example,  J-Lo, Travis Scott, Miley Cyrus, and Camila Mendes were all under the category of not knowing how to truly represent the definition of camp because their taste was so bland and simple and something that we could’ve seen on anyone, not really pushing out of the modern comfort zone.

Although there was people who misunderstood the theme, many stars took their comfort zone and threw it out the window. Male stars like Ezra Miller, Darren Criss, and Hamish Bowles took the stage by not only following the notes on camp but having the courage to dress so flamboyant with even little details in makeup and had a true purpose to their outfits. Women like Janelle Monae and Dua Lipa also had a great look that expressed art in such a abstract form, truly defining 2019’s Met Gala.

Without these memorable people and the wonderful host Anna Wintour, the Gala wouldn’t have been as spectacular as it was. With a crazy theme comes unique surprises and history being made, which was went down at this years special Gala.
