The story of Arthur Fleck is very depressing. It consists of a lot of dimensions that add to the depressing and dramatic tone like the heaps of trash everywhere and the faulty infrastructure create a feeling of bleakness and hopelessness during the film. Joker also shows Gotham city from the perspective of the average person, not from Batman’s perspective.
The film is not always depressing though. There are intense scenes, suspenseful scenes, creepy scenes, and triumphant scenes throughout the film that make the viewer feel an array of emotions. The violence is something some people are concerned about, but the film does not linger on it and it doesn’t happen too often.
Hildur Guðnadóttir, the film’s composer, uses strings and choirs to portray Arthur’s slow descend into madness which heightens the emotions and plays in a important role of developing the story as a whole. At the beginning of the film, the music is quite sad and somber, but as Arthur becomes more accustomed with violence the music changes accordingly to sound more evil. When Arthur is determined on something Guðnadóttir, uses a thumping timpani to portray it. She uses strings and horns to make some scenes feel more triumphant as well.
The cinematography in Joker is astounding and it is all thanks to Lawrence Sher. There are many shots that are beautiful throughout the movie and they all feel meaningful. The frequent close up shots are a great way to make sure the audience knows what the characters are feeling. The use of lighting also helps portray the mood of the scene and the emotions the characters are feeling.
Joker is a very controversial film that will definitely be talked about for a while. It has an interesting message about mental health and will leave viewers thinking and discussing it. The film encourages viewers to try and understand mental illness and to change the way they think of it. It is the story of a man that was dealt the wrong hand and slowly turned evil. It is an important film that is very relevant during these times.
