Hispanic Heritage Month

The Hispanic Culture at San Dimas

October 21, 2019

Hispanic Heritage Month took place from September 15 to October 15 and it is a holiday to celebrate the history, culture, and the hardships that many Hispanic people go through. San Dimas High School, being a mixing pot of ethnicity and diversity, has many Hispanic students that make up a majority of the SDHS community. This year at San Dimas a club was formed to bring together and acknowledge those students, not only during Hispanic Heritage Month but all year round as well.

Scarlet Muñoz is the president of the Hispanic Heritage Club at San Dimas. She explained that her intent is to bring more attention and awareness to Hispanic culture. Muñoz stated, “I started the Hispanic Heritage Club because I felt it wasn’t really represented that well in school and I kind of wanted to bring awareness about the culture and teach people about the traditions”. Muñoz’s goal is to expand people’s knowledge of the Hispanic culture whether it is their own culture or not.

Muñoz’s focus on Hispanic culture is especially important during Hispanic Heritage Month in order to bring people together and celebrate the culture and its way of life.

Senior Danae Merlo said, “My family is very involved with the Hispanic culture and its traditions from the way we [her family] celebrate our holidays and by which ones we celebrate. Values in Hispanic culture are principles and ideas that create unity among people.” Merlo also mentioned that, “Some values that I feel that our important to my culture are the traditional family and religious customs because those two are the most prominent.”

Hispanic heritage and the culture that subsides within it is very important to Hispanic Heritage month as it is based on the community, history, and contributions to the world made by Hispanic people.

Ms.Perez stated that, “I feel like it’s a sense of a community, kind of like a family outside your family.” This community is formed on the history of people coming together to bond with the same background, issues, and shared culture.
