The varsity boys water polo team lost CIF round one on November 5th, 2019

November 22, 2019

The San Dimas boys were the home team for the 2019-2020 boys water polo game. They were playing against El Modena, a team that was 14-4, while San Dimas was a good 17-1. San Dimas wasn’t favored to win, but the boys definitely believed they had a chance at advancing to round two.

The first quarter ended with the score being 2-1, Saints were up, and everyone was hoping the lead was there to stay. Unfortunately, after the first half, El Modena was up 4-5. Despite being behind by one, the boys stayed positive and kept fighting. Coach Daniel Feola and assistant coach Jessee Johnston had made the decision to pull up a couple of JV boys to play as well. There was a total of three JV boys who were brought up; Junior Dominic Vecino, sophomore Bailey Wood, and sophomore Leeston Gordon.

Once the third quarter started, the boys were ready to play their hearts out. El Modena had scored three unanswered, and San Dimas wasn’t happy. Starting seniors Ben Nance and Bear Reep were not giving up yet. Reep set Nance up perfectly for a redirect, and no surprise there, a goal for San Dimas! The third quarter ended with a score of 5-9, El Modena was still in the lead.

The highly anticipated fourth quarter was starting, and everyone was anxious. The JV boys who were pulled up still hadn’t gone in, but they were still happy to be chosen as support. “It made me feel very accomplished, and I do think it helped me for my future years playing water polo.” Sophomore Bailey Wood added when asked how he felt about being pulled up. Chance Santamaria was the next to make a stunning goal. Santamaria made a powerful top shot while the Saints were up on the sixth from five. The score was now 6-9 with El Modena still up with a high lead. With less than two minutes left, Nance scored two more stunning goals, Sadly it wasn’t enough to claim the win. With the final score being 8-9, El Modena won, the saints lost round one CIF.

Despite the defeat, that was not the most important part of that game. The loss was sad, but the boys came out to play. They fought with all their hearts and their teamwork was immeasurable. Those boys put on a great fight and a great game. Parents, coaches, and teammates alike were all so proud of all the effort the Saints put into that game. Great work boys!
