The ASL Club is a club where you can learn the American Sign Language in school together with your friends. When you want to learn ASL but you don’t have it as a subject, you can come and visit the club. In this club, you learn the alphabet and vocabulary in sign language. The goal from the club is to learn ASL and bring awareness to the many uses for ASL. Also, the plan of the club is that you have fun with ASL and that you continue learning the language the next year.

Mr. Distelrath, the club supervisor and ASL teacher at San Dimas, said, “I am only the assistant. The club president leads the club.” The club presidents tasks are running the meetings and helping to organize everything. Also, she helps with any questions or problems that participants might have. The club meet two times a month, usually every second week. They meet in Mr. Distelrath’s classroom which is room M6. They meet there during lunch.

Joining the club is easy. Any San Dimas can join simply by showing up. However, students must be willing to participate in the club’s activities. That means they must be willing to learn and to work together with the other people in the club. Students can even join the club without any prior knowledge of American Sign Language since the point of the club is simply to help and educate others in ASL.

So far, the club has practiced a few simple things like the National Anthem and the San Dimas high School’s alma mater. Mr. Distelrath and the club president hope that any Saints hoping to learn a little bit more about ASL will stop by a meeting whenever they’d like.
