Queen and Slim Movie Review
a Present Bonnie and Clyde
December 18, 2019
Queen and Slim was released on November 27, 2019, and was directed by Melina Matsoukas who is famous for directing the music video for Beyonce’s song “Formation”.
The movie takes place in the present time where the two main characters, Slim played by Daniel Kaluuya and Queen played by Jodie-Turner Smith where the two find themselves matched up on a dating app that will lead to one dead cop and two misunderstood fugitives on the run.
Pulled over for a minor traffic violation that will lead to them killing the cop in self-defense and causing them to flee the scene and hide from the police. This film portrays the Black Live Matter movement throughout the movie as these types of situations happen to African Americans across America.
The focus of the movie was the big “What If?” question. What if every single innocent African American that was gunned down fought back. What would happen from there? Will society see them as a criminal or someone who was fighting in self-defense. With Slim being a well-taught man with high morals and Queen being a lawyer, these two are the last people you would see being killed in police brutality but their skin color pushed them to the top of the list.
This movie has the audience hoping for the best until the end. Hoping they do not get caught and can live a happy and normal life. With their love growing stronger and law enforcement also growing closer to them, it makes the audience sit on the edge of their seat till the end.
