Life after High School

With an unfinished senior year due to COVID, some might ask how is the class of 2020 doing?

November 5, 2020

Due to the pandemic the class of 2020 sadly never really got to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Graduations, dances, and senior trips disappeared in just a snap. With so much unfinished business how are they taking on their new and abrupt college lives? Are they passing with flying colors or tanking as we speak?

it’s given me a sense of independence, I’m growing up.

— Ryan Gutierrez

“Well Since Cal Poly wasn’t working for me and they did decline me as well I’m attending Mt. Sac community college right now,” San Dimas resident Ryan Gutierrez said. Because distanced learning is still taking some getting used to it seems like there’s confusion for all parties involved.

“The teachers are really confused since this is new for them and due to everything being online it’s kind of hard because I’m teaching myself,” Gutierrez continued.

Gutierrez is employed at a restaurant and claimed that it gets a bit stressful balancing the two during the weekends. “Sometimes I come home from an eight-hour shift and have to start working on an essay,” Gutierrez said.

Although, despite the difficulties, college hasn’t been all negative for this SDHS alum, “I would say college has had more of a positive effect on me because it’s given me a sense of independence, I’m growing up.”

Even though Gutierrez has gained a new sense of independence, he still feels the losses of the global pandemic, “With the circumstances of COVID-19 I feel like my senior year of high school was left incomplete. But I know some people’s lives are worse than mine so I don’t complain that much, but I do miss the simple things about high school.” Gutierrez continues, “[In college] the teachers really don’t care about you. You paid for that class already so they don’t really care if you come in or not, it’s all up to you, they won’t check up on you,” Gutierrez added that even though college can be a scary place, “The teachers are really nice though once you get to know them.”
