Dodgers win the 2020 World Series

December 17, 2020

Dodger fans have long to hear it. After a 32 year drought, the Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series Champions once again.

Due to the Covid 19 outbreak, it was unknown if a 2020 baseball season was going to happen. But after many delegations within the MLB office, a modified 60 game season was played with modified playoffs as well.

Through the regular season, the Dodgers absolutely dominated their competition. Strong seasons from the likes of Corey Seager, Mookie Betts, and more lead to LA posted a league-leading 43-17 record where they only lost one series in the regular season.

With the number one record in the league, the Dodgers secured a number one seed in the playoffs and started the playoffs in National Leauge Wild Card against the eight-seed Brewers. In this best of 3 game series, the Dodgers secured a sweep by winning the first two games and moving on to the NLDS.

Their next opponent was one of their division rivals, the San Diego Padres. The Padres were a very well balanced team whose record was not far behind LA. Despite this and a very close game two, the Dodgers once again secured a sweep in this five-game series and moved on to the National Leauge Championship Series.

In the NLCS, the Dodgers faced potentially their greatest threat in the Atlanta Braves. Both teams came into the seven-game series undefeated up to that point. After falling down to a 3-1 game deficit, the Dodgers pulled out the victory by winning the next three games in a row and moving onto the World Series. Corey Seager was named the NLCS MVP.

In the World Series, the number one team in National Leauge, the Dodgers, faced the number one team in the American Leauge, the Tampa Bay Rays. Both teams went back and forth with each team winning a game at a time until the series was tied 2-2. But the back and forth ended there with the Dodgers taking the series 4-2 and claiming the Commissioners Trophy. Corey Seager was named World Series MVP.

After losing in seven straight playoff appearances, Dodger fans shared much relief and joy. “It was shocking. They had not won in over 30 years so I wasn’t sure what to expect but when they actually won it was such an exciting moment,” dodger fan Eris Guttierrez says.

When talking about the stress Guttierez stated, “They were about to get eliminated in the NLCS and it was nerve-racking, but luckily they pulled through and moved on.”

For many, sports fandom transcends generation and with a team as old as the Dodgers, this is especially true. Guttierez said

My Abuelita has been a fan since the 70s and watching it happen made her so happy. She said it was a long time coming.

Despite the struggles and past failures, the LA finished on top in 2020. Dodgers fans can rest easy knowing that they are the 2020 World Series Champions.
