San Dimas Girls Varsity Volleyball: Valle Vista League Champs

How the team was able to persevere and stay motivated throughout the season and win every league game.

November 1, 2021

The San Dimas girls varsity volleyball team has accomplished so much already, with an undefeated league title under their belt, who knows what more is in store for them. This past month has been a roller coaster of emotions for the girls, not only because of playing with such high stakes, but also returning to play after almost two years of not having high school volleyball due to covid. With league now coming to a close, each game held a lot of purpose, and for the seniors, truly will be an unforgettable season.

For the lady saints, the season started off a little rocky. Primarily being a new team, they had a lot of things that they needed to work on as a whole group; mainly connection. Having to play Bonita so early in the season, the loss really put a damper on the charisma. However, as a team, the girls were able to work through the hardship to win their first game in league against West Covina in three sets. The next game against Northview was not so easy. The saints still won, but it took them 4 sets to do so. They dropped a set, but even so, did not stop the girls from taking the win. The next two games the lady saints won in 3 sets against Diamond ranch and Covina. The final school in the league, Charter Oak, was just as easy as the rest for the lady saints. They won, making them 5-0 in league. Then, they played each school once more, coming out on top for each game, making the lady saints 10-0 in league. In total, the team only lost 3 sets, and ultimately has created a fun environment to be around.

Senior Alyssa Gomez states how “the team has really learned to play with each other, and with every game comes more chemistry and creates a fun environment to play in.” The girls have learned how to find fun even in some of the slower games. Before the games, the girls like to do their pregame warmup and eat skittles, which is tradition. Once they run out, they make sure to dance while warming up to stay calm and keep their adrenaline in check. Junior Franki Coleman states how “Dancing with my team is really just a way to relax and have fun. Keeping calm is vital in order to do well and not let your nerves get the best of you.”

Overall, the lady saints were able to preserve through injuries and hardships and grab undefeated league champs. For the 7 seniors on the team, this season was truly one of the best; and really proved to play your hearts out, because you never know when you will play your last game.
