Annual Boys Varsity Basketball game VS Bonita

December 16, 2021

On Monday night December 6, 2021, the San Dimas boys varsity basketball team stepped on the court to take on their rival, the Bonita Bearcats at home. The Saints have lost to the Bearcats for the last 15+ years every time they faced each other. Based on statistics, Bonita has beaten San Dimas by an average of 19.2 points within the last 10 years they’ve matched up. Last season, the Bearcats beat the Saints 65-38 in a blowout. This season the Saints have a goal to not only make it to CIF but win CIF in their division. Bonita is in a higher division than San Dimas so beating them would boost their seeding. When asked how he felt about playing Bonita, captain Braden Zemetra stated “Honestly, it’s just another game for most of us. If we look at it like oooooh it’s Bonita, we’re already defeating ourselves. We’re taking a different approach to the game this year. We’ve prepared for them just as we prepared for all the other teams we’ve come up against this season. We’re gonna play our game and take the win.”

Starters were announced for both teams, and as tip-off commenced, the Saints were ready to make history. Both teams were super nervous at the beginning of the first quarter and it showed as b they each went scoreless for the first 2 minutes. Things changed quickly though as the Saints began to get bucket after bucket. At the end of the first quarter, the Saints were up 15-7. As the second quarter commenced, the Saints came out even better out-hustling Bonita, out-rebounding Bonita, and yet again, outscoring Bonita. At the half, the score was 30-15 and for the first time in 15+ years against San Dimas, the Bearcats were in a hole they might not be able to climb out of.

The third quarter began and the Bearcats came out strong and showed a little heart as they began to come back.

At the end of the third, the Saints were still up 42-32 but the job wasn’t finished yet. In the fourth, the Saints came out and dominated as they score 20 points to the Bearcats 13, and for the first time in many many years, The Saints came out victorious against the Bearcats. SD fans stormed the court to celebrate their victory alongside them, while Bonita’s fanbase walked out of the gym quickly, and sorrowfully. The Saints were led by their other captain, Zaye Salgado as he scored 16 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists. The Saints are now 7-1 and looking to improve their record. and get better and better each time they step on the court.
