Dodgers lose Corey Seager in Free Agency

How did the Dodger Fanbase take this?

December 16, 2021

As many Dodger fans now know, Shortstop Corey Seager has signed with the Texas Rangers on a 10-year $325 million dollar contract.  In addition to this, Pitcher Max Scherzer has signed with the New York Mets on a 3-year $130 million contract.  News of this broke out on November 30 and has since gone viral throughout the Dodgers fanbase.

Multiple news sources reported that Seager rejected the Dodgers offer not long before signing the record-breaking contract with the Rangers.  Once it was known that Seager had no intention to re-sign with the Dodgers the Rangers made a huge push to sign Seager.  Former teammate Justin Turner told Fansided, “Obviously watching him develop and turn into the player that he’s become was pretty special for me playing for six years to the right of him.”  Many fans have already taken to social media to express themselves through either posts or stories.  As you can expect, many were very disappointed with this and many also wondered why Seager decided to leave.  The public is still unsure as to why Seager decided to turn down the Dodgers contract but there is a rumor that says Seager felt pressured by the players union to sign the contract with the Rangers.

When asked about what he thought about the situation, Mr. Brandler, Hospitality Teacher and avid Dodger fan said “I was pretty bummed, he actually gave us a lot of good years and he ended up being worth a lot more money… I think a bigger problem is pitching; the whole scandal going down and then also losing Scherzer”.

Mr. Brandler also explained that while the Dodgers may have lost Seager they still have a solid batting line-up.  While some fans may see it this way there were others who saw it as a sad departure.  Seager was drafted by the Dodgers in 2012 and made his Major League debut in 2015; he was with the Dodgers for a total of 9 years.  Sophomore Julian Segura described his feelings as “gut-wrenching and disappointing” and even “teared up” when he found out that Seager had signed with the Rangers.

As much as fans wish Seager had stayed with the Dodgers the least they can do is continue to support the 27-year-old shortstop who still has a long career ahead of him.
