The San Dimas girl’s basketball team was defeated by the Bonita Bearcats on Monday, the 15th, at 5:00 pm on their home court for the annual Citrus Cup.
Walking into the gym was like walking into a crowd of football fans. On one side, there was blue; on the other, green. Cameras everywhere, getting ready to take action shots. The student section was crazy for the Saints side, and Bonita’s side was not that great. Senior Jayden Hanson said, “I’m surprised Bonita won. They were loud, but they barely had anyone in their section. I second-guessed myself.” Both teams came out strong in the starting minutes of the first quarter.
San Dimas Girls had a strong starting line up as they had three seniors, one junior, and one sophomore on the court. The Saints girls put up a hard fight for all 4 quarters but were down in the first and second quarter. Over 20 whistles were blown from fouls back and forth. The girls on both sides of the ball were getting scrappy. Multiple players on the ground and the crap talk never stopped.

Faith Kearns states “The most challenging part about playing in the Bonita game was playing as a team. We all played individually and had a hard time coming together to play as one individual.”

The girls were feeling competitive and were ready to make a comeback for the last quarter. San Dimas scored four times back to back as they made Bonita turn over the ball. This helped the Saints get back into the game as they were still down. Everyone was so nervous knowing this was one of their best games.
Bonita took the lead within five minutes left of the game which didn’t feel good for the players. Senior Stephanie Segura states ”It definitely did not feel amazing to loose. I was just grateful for the opportunity to play for the 4th time with my team there was a lot of things we could have done better but I know that Bonita is just a bump in the road.”

The hope was still there. The Saints weren’t down by much and they were fighting so hard to stay alive. After four turnovers from the Saints and two fouls the San Dimas girls were down by 10 points. They couldn’t score and Bonita took the win. Even after the loss, memories were still made on the court. The Bonita games at San Dimas are some of the best memories. Junior Nevaeh Verdines says “My favorite part about playing in the Bonita Vs San Dimas game was definitely the energy and intensity that both teams and crowds brought.”
The grind never stops for these girls. Hard work pays off and one game doesn’t define who you are as a person. San Dimas will come back after this hard loss and face Grand Terrace on Wednesday the 17th at 6:00pm on their home court.
