The spring sports season is approaching for the Saints, and they are putting in the work to prepare themselves to be the best. What many people don’t see is the early morning practices and the after-school conditioning that come with the success of baseball, softball, stunt, track, and boys’ golf, as all teams hope to achieve this season. Behind the scenes, all the magic happens with the Saint athletes; they are willing to sacrifice their free time, sleep schedule, and work long days to achieve the results they want.
Throughout the past four years, the San Dimas
Saints baseball team has always faced top competition in the state. The Saints played Orange Lutheran last Tuesday for one of their first preseason games. It was a surprise to everyone that the San Dimas Saints were able to end the game with a tie, due to Orange Lutheran being one of the top teams in the nation. The work that the saints had to put in so they could persevere had to do with all the behind-the-scenes work. Even after regular practice ends after school, Senior Cole Lipp is willing to put in the extra work by getting the extra swings on the tee and working his upper body at the gym. This will help his throwing arm get stronger, which is very beneficial since he is an outfielder. Cole states, “After the team practice is over, I like to go home and work on my swing so I can fix my mechanics.” “I want my last season to be the best season I’ve played here at San Dimas, and I know we’re capable of winning the league and going far in CIF.” If everyone has a similar mindset and dedication for this baseball season, the Saints will have a season they won’t forget.
In track and field, Senior Stephney Segura is determined to finish her track and field career with a bang. She has just finished her winter basketball season and is not practicing after school for shot put. Shot put requires strength and constant working on your technique, and Stephany is all in to achieve her goals. “I feel like basketball and flag football are more competitive than participating in track; it’s a one-man sport, while the other sports I have to work as a team,” Stephany states. “I get to decide when to practice and what will work best for me so I can get the results I want and the distance I want to achieve.” Hopefully, her determination gets her that league title and CIF invite.
For the stunt, Senior Sophia Ingran is dedicated enough to wake up at 5 AM and work on the routine that they want to perfect. Flexibility, strength, and trusting your teammates to hold you up in the air require lots of training, and doing this at 5 AM is not for the weak. Sophia talks about how “waking up early is hard, but it will pay off in the end if they want to do well in their routines.” “Hopefully, we get good scores this upcoming season.”
It is clear that winning doesn’t just come from luck for these spring sport athletes; it comes with early morning and late night practices, pushing their bodies, and staying consistent with the process. When their season officially begins, these Saints will be more ready than ever!
