Several schools in Southern California, including Bonita High School in La Verne, California High School in Whittier, and El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills, have experienced lockdowns in recent weeks after threats were reported. Law enforcement searched campuses and followed protocol before determining there was no active danger, then lifted the lockdowns. Acknowledging these incidents, both nearby and regional, is important because they highlight ongoing safety concerns and reinforce the need for awareness within the San Dimas High School community.
The lockdowns at Bonita High School, California High School, and El Camino Real Charter High School followed standard safety procedures while authorities investigated the reported threats. During each situation, law enforcement responded quickly by securing campuses, checking classrooms, and communicating with school administrators. Although no active danger was ultimately found, the situations caused a lot of concern among students, staff, and families who waited for updates while safety checks were completed.
While these incidents did not occur at San Dimas High School, their proximity serves as a reminder of the importance of being ready. School safety protocols such as lockdown drills, emergency communication systems, and coordination with local law enforcement are designed to protect students and staff in uncertain situations. These procedures help ensure that everyone understands their role, from securing classrooms to remaining calm while awaiting official instructions. Practicing these steps ahead of time allows schools to respond more efficiently if a real emergency were ever to occur.
Samantha Moscoso, a 12th grade student at San Dimas High School, said the school does a strong job helping students feel secure. “even though it’s scary, the teachers always have a plan and know what they’re doing,” she explained, adding that regular drills and clear instructions help students know what to do during emergencies.
English teacher Mr. Coulter also emphasized the importance of continued improvement. “All of these systems will only work well if there is good communication, and that is something we can keep working on,” he said emphasizing that schools must always be prepared and there is always more we can be doing to ensure everyone’s safety.
By recognizing these regional incidents, the San Dimas High School community can remain aware and proactive. Even when threats are determined to be non-credible, they reinforce the need for continued vigilance, cooperation, and clear communication to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students and staff.
