National Athletic Training Month

National Athletic Training Month

To many people, the march is about St. Patrick’s day, luck, and all about green. But many don’t acknowledge other national stuff celebrated, such as women’s history month, disability awareness month, and athletic training month. At San Dimas High School, we only have one professional athletic trainer (A.T.): Mrs. Truax. Truax has developed her life into becoming an athletic trainer for school and professional sports, and she helps keep our student-athletes safe and stable to continue playing for our school, as well as providing for our regular students to make sure they have no severe injuries and to keep them on track with their health.

Athletic trainers prevent, examine, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate acute and chronic injuries, whether it be at a regular clinic or a school, athletic trainers provide for every student in need. Athletic trainers such as Mrs. Truax work very hard, day to night, keeping an eye out for any athletes that may or may not get injured during games or practice and are always on their feet to help with any sudden injuries. Athletic trainers also help students prepare for games, like taping ankles or arms to prevent strains and sprains to the player so they can continue playing the sport that they love.

In the sports med club, many members learn how to wrap body parts and monitor and care for athletes’ injuries during games, and when in rehab, they help athletes train and heal their injuries so that they can be in top shape when returning to their games.. Being in this club has many perks like skipping classes to attend tournaments and games, and being ahead of everyone medical-wise when it comes to healing wounds.

Taking sports med as an elective is highly recommended for many scenarios. It can help in harmful scenarios where someone has a cardiac arrest or receives a heart attack and needs CPR or any life-threatening situation. Sports med teaches you how to wrap body parts, CPR, and how to treat severe injuries like amputations and more. It is recommended to many students who aim to be in the medical field to be in sports med in high school so that they get to experience helping out people in different scenarios that could be mild or life-threatening.

The perks of being an A.T. vary in many ways. You get the experience to go to many different games. For example, sports med recently went to a clippers game to watch and see the A.T perform on the court. You get the honor of saving a life and having different unique experiences with athletes and people in general.

Many Athletic Trainers worldwide are rarely ever acknowledged for their accomplishments, whether it be saving a life, or just helping a student from getting a severe injury, Athletic trainers save lives every day with their medical knowledge. Mrs. Truax has been working as an Athletic trainer for years and explains how her experience has been very tiring and can cause people to get burned out, yet they continue to keep going because they love the feeling of saving one’s life. Athletic trainers play a crucial role in keeping athletes healthy and making sure they have amazing performances on the court or field. March is considered national athletic training month because all athletic trainers deserve widespread recognition, appreciation, and dedicated care for the sacrifices that they make for us athletes.
