Hispanic Heritage Month is a month celebrating Hispanic culture nationwide during Sept.15-Oct.15, and San Dimas High School had many fun ways of celebrating the month. They celebrated it with their annual soccer tournament hosted by the Spanish Honors Society, and the fun spirit days for the students to participate in to represent Hispanic culture.
To start off the celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month, The Spanish Honors Society hosted their annual soccer tournament during lunch, in the quad, from Sept.29-Oct.2. There, 8 teams of three were created to go against one another during many rounds until 2 teams were left to decide who will win the soccer tournament. There was music playing, people watching, and excitement from the players and the spectators. At the end, the team of Santiago Perez, Kirrolos Mikhail, and Lucas Velarde won the whole tournament, making it an amazing memory for the three of them to remember. The soccer tournament had united the Hispanic community and all the people at the school during the week it was held with the cheering from the crowd and the many soccer games that the teams participated in.
San Dimas High School also celebrated Hispanic Heritage month by the fun spirit days also from the week of Sept.29-Oct 2. that the Spanish honors Society also planned. The Spirit days included Las Flores and Flag Day on Monday, Soccer Jersey Day on Tuesday, famous Latino figure on Wednesday, and Ranchero Day on Thursday. All these spirit days had a tremendous effect on promoting Hispanic culture at San Dimas, as it gave people more of an idea about the aspects of the culture. Also, it created more appreciation for it as dressing up for the spirit days helped the students and staff connect with it more deeply. Seeing students, teachers, and staff repping Hispanic flags, cowboy boots, Latino figure costumes, and soccer jerseys further showed how united the Hispanic community is at the school and how it can unite the students and staff as well.
Both the soccer tournament and spirit days displayed to the school how vibrant and amazing Hispanic culture is, and how much the culture of the Hispanic community at San Dimas High School means to them. “To me, Hispanic Heritage Month means more than just celebrating our culture, traditions, food, and music, but it’s about recognizing the hardworking and resilient people who make up this community, It’s a time to honor the endless love, unity, and strength we share as we come together to celebrate who we are,” senior Maiya Gutierrez, president of the Spanish Honors Society, said, “I think it’s important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage at SDHS because representation and culture awareness matter so much right now. In a time of division, fear amongst our community, and lack of empathy, it shows that our culture, our families, and our stories belong here along with everyone else’s, and we can spread the love the community has for each other throughout campus to make our culture heard and seen.”
As it is clearly seen, from celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at San Dimas High School, it had a tremendous impact by not only bringing the Hispanic community of the school together, but also all the students, staff, and teachers as well.
