At San Dimas High School, students and teachers are facing the rise of artificial intelligence head-on, a technology that’s changing how people learn, work, and even think about the future. What began as a helpful tool for quick answers and creative ideas has quickly evolved into one of the most controversial topics in education and society.
Artificial intelligence, often called AI, is no longer limited to tech companies or computer labs. It now powers everything from phone assistants to art generators and even helps students write essays or solve math problems. While some believe it’s the next step in innovation, others worry it’s replacing human effort and originality.

Mr. Sill, an English teacher at San Dimas High School, has seen firsthand how AI affects his classroom. “AI writes notes for them and pulls quotes for them, and it really robs students of being part of the learning that’s happening,” he said. “When they rely on it, they stop seeing themselves as thinkers and communicators.” He also emphasizes that teachers now have to be more careful about detecting AI-generated writing and encouraging authentic student voices.
Students also have mixed feelings about AI. Some admit to using it for homework help or quick explanations, while others worry it’s making people too dependent on technology. “When I use AI, it sometimes feels like AI is just the easier escape route,” one student said. Another student added, “If I rely on it too much, I don’t actually learn anything but rather get the assignment done for the grade.”
The controversy around AI continues to grow, both inside and outside of classrooms. As more tools become available, teachers around campus are working to set rules that may encourage responsible use of AI without completely banning the technology, as at times it may be a useful study tool.
While AI can make life easier, it also challenges people to think about what makes human creativity and problem solving unique. Whether it’s shaping the future for the better or worse, one thing is for sure, artificial intelligence isn’t going away anytime soon and will continue to advance throughout each and every day.
