Between, early morning classes, late night study sessions, and long work shifts, many students are learning that balancing life and a job is no easy task. For today’s students, working is viewed as a necessity rather a choice, whether it’s to support themselves, help their families, or saving for their future, students are actively looking for jobs. Even though working jobs helps students learn essential job skills, it already adds a tremendous amount of pressure to an already demanding lifestyle.
For high school senior Isaiah Capacete, his first job at Kohl’s during the winter holiday was a blast as he found himself a way to earn money while also managing his family responsibilities. He drove his little brother Ethan to basketball practices and games in Rancho Cucamonga while also taking his sister to practices in Fontana, all while balancing school. “I loved my time during Kohl’s because I was in a chill environment,” Isaiah said. Despite enjoying his time at Kohl’s, he admitted at the end of the holiday season he was disappointed of his short term working, thus pushing him to look for another job this upcoming spring season.
Arwen Gutierrez, another high school senior and AP student, recently started her first job at Jersey Mike’s, all while she has a packed schedule that includes ASB responsibilities, advanced classes, and her social life. “Even though my schedule is packed, I am able to balance my life and still be an awesome ASB worker and student,” Arwen explained. Arwen emphasizes that her work environment also gives her a chance to see friends who are dining, allowing for social connection within her workplace.
For high school junior Danny Diaz, who quit basketball to focus on work, Albertsons has allowed him to build his bank account and social connections. “I mean I don’t have any crazy hard classes, so I don’t really have homework, and besides that I just work so I have money for myself,” Danny said. He enjoys saving all the money he makes and rarely spends it. He spends most of his free time at work, highlighting how much he prioritizes his financial independence over extracurriculars.
Finally, Derek Galeazzi, a high school senior, works at Handels while taking AVID and keeping up with his social life. “I’m getting paid, and I like my job and the people there. I’m able to support myself so I can buy whatever I want,” Derek said. He added that he enjoys spending time at work and having his own money to do whatever he wants.
Each student finds their own to balance life, school, and work. Whether it’s earning money for themselves, hanging out with friends, or saving for the future, balancing life isn’t easy, however these students are learning how one shift at a time.
