Some people may ask What is AVID? AVID is a nationally recognized program in which people around the country take part and know of. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. Avid is not just a regular elective class; it is a college prep course. The main focus of avid is to focus on students and try to help students get into college and also be prepared for the workload of college, as well as their life outside of school.
AVID is built on the foundation of WICOR, which is Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and reading. This acronym is very prominent in avid as it helps to teach students how to be engaged when learning including helping students set up for tutorials. An AVID tutorial is a format used to help guide students in the right direction to solve problems. These tutorials focus on helping students understand what they dont know to find the point of confusion so they can better understand where they need help.
An extremely important part of the class is that avid is a class in support of your other classes. AVID is also a class where we have the opportunity of time to get work in other classes done. According to senior and AVID Member Janeane Gomez “It has taught me how to study better as well as given me time and resources in class to work on classwork I have been struggling with”. Avid does not give you many asasignments as that class time is time for yourself and students to learn and grow for their other classes.

Relationships are another key aspect among avid classes. In avid it is a 4 year program containing the same students year round in which it gives the students as AVID Teacher Mrs Ruiz state we gain “opportunities to be able to learn and grow together to gain a strong bond of friendships with eachother”
Other fun activities AVID has are it’s projects. One of the significant projects we have had are the Chick Fil A Leader lab which is a lab partnered with Chick Fil A in which we set up and plan activities in which we support our local community by giving back.
Field trips are also a extremely fun part about being in AVID. We have field trips to different colleges which give students opportunities to visit and explore different colleges nearby. Other field trips we have are basketball games such as the clippers game.
