Students and athletes gathered at San Dimas High School on April 10th to compete in the AVID Royal Rumble basketball tournament, an event organized to raise support and awareness for the Foothill Family Shelter. The event was loud, energetic, and fun, with fans cheering on the teams throughout the tournament. The fundraiser was organized by AVID and supported by the school community, with all proceeds going toward helping families in need.

The games showcased a competitive yet positive atmosphere where students could have fun while still doing their best to win. Students packed the bleachers, cheering loudly for their friends and classmates, making this fundraiser different from most school fundraisers. AVID added a variety of games to keep the gym entertaining, such as a three-point contest and raffles for Chick-fil-A gift cards. Chick-fil-A’s mascot, the cow, was even there to hype up the crowd and provide photo opportunities for students and athletes. Music played between games, and the energy never really died down, keeping everyone engaged from start to finish.

Beyond the competition, the event stood out for its focus on inclusion and leadership. Our school’s Best Buddies club was involved this year, and more students were able to participate and feel connected to the event, making it about more than just basketball. AVID students took the lead in planning and running everything, from organizing teams to managing the schedule, showing the leadership skills they’ve developed through the program.

AVID coordinator Mrs. Valencia, who helped run the event, said, “It was a great and fun way to display AVID’s work and leadership roles, and is historically a way to do good for the community.” Her words reflected the purpose behind the tournament, highlighting how AVID continues to create opportunities for students to give back. She added that she enjoys being part of something big and exciting for San Dimas students and families.
Students who participated in the tournament and were there to support can attest to how much fun the fundraiser was. Senior Derek Galeazzi added, “Royal Rumble was really fun as it was competitive and we got to play and meet other people from different grades, especially since my team made it all the way to the finals.” He highlighted how the night was a great way to connect with all the students and make new friends.
By the end of the night, the AVID Royal Rumble fundraiser was more than just a tournament; it was a way for students to come together, support a meaningful charity that helps families, and show how school events can make a real impact on the community. This tradition at San Dimas High School should always be recognized for its hard work and for honoring its sole purpose: doing right by the community.
